How does a flameless heater work? A flameless heater operates by using diesel fuel to agitate hydraulic oil in a flameless, sparkless, low-pressure environment. The combustion in a flameless heater takes place entirely within the confines of the combustion chamber, similarly to a reciprocating piston engine.
Simply cut open the top of the FRH polybag sleeve, Place the MRE food portion inside the bag next to the heater. Add plain water to the “Fill Line”, and fold the open end of the bag. In just 12 minutes, enjoy a hot meal anytime, anyplace.
To make a flameless heater, magnesium dust is mixed with salt and a little iron dust in a thin, flexible pad about the size of a playing card. To activate the heater, a soldier adds a little water. Within seconds the flameless heater reaches the boiling point and is bubbling and steaming.
Quicklime, inexpensive and readily available, is generally recognized by the FDA as safe. The product of the reaction is calcium hydroxide. Finely powdered magnesium metal alloyed with a small amount of iron, and table salt, actuated by adding water, as in an MRE flameless ration heater.
